About Billy Kilson
The Berklee-educated, innovative drummer Billy Kilson may have started out playing the trumpet and trombone, but playing the drums was certainly his calling. While attending Berklee College of Music, in Boston, he studied with Alan Dawson. Alan Dawson became his teacher, his mentor and Billy absorbed everything Alan taught.
This diversified performer has toured, recorded and received Grammy awards as well as several nominations for his work with such famed musicians as Dave Holland, George Duke, David Sanborn, Bob James, Ahmad Jamal, Hank Jones, Ron Carter, Larry Carlton, Philip Bailey, Jill Scott, Dianne Reeves, Michael Franks, John Mayer, Chris Botti and Sting.
Billy has four recordings of his own. His band projects are a summation of his collective musical experiences which illustrates his diverse background. Although he has achieved notable success as a sideman in concert and on recordings, Billy’s greatest passion is sharing his musical experiences in clinics and teaching the art of drumming and music globally.
He is a debut author of his new book “The Solid Bead Concept”. Also he has been sharing his knowledge and concepts with students as a professor of ensemble department at Berklee College of Music since 2015.
Billy is known as a drummer of the highest caliber. His smooth odd meter approach with an infectious undeniable
stage presence is reminiscent of the great jazz drummers before him.
The educator, drummer and now author is sharing his experiences with his fans around the world. However, he always says nothing is greater than sharing each and every moment of his performing history as well as his knowledge with his Berklee students. Billy says “no doubt, besides my family, my students are my greatest inspiration.”
