When We See the World’s First AI Movie Director?

The world around us is changing fast.

Already, all of us are increasingly relying on computers to help us with all aspects of our day-to-day lives.

With the use of smart devices such as phones, tablets, watches, and TV’s, computers are automating many of the processes is that help speed up and improve the way we live our lives.

The science of artificial intelligence has been explored rigorously over the years in film.

Movies such as Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, Steven Spielberg’s AI, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Ex Machina have all focused on artificial intelligence and how we humans will live alongside it.

In today’s world, the technology does not yet exist for true artificial intelligence, however, sophisticated AI and machine learning algorithms are paving the way for the birth of real AI.

From chatbots that learn the more that you talk to them, to sophisticated big data analytics software such as Largo AI, which can accurately predict a movie’s future box office gross, we are in exciting times when it comes to the development of artificial intelligence.

With programs such as LargoAI becoming more sophisticated at identifying the ingredients of a movie in order to recommend changes, it will not be long before these programs will be able to take a more active involvement in movie production.

So when exactly will we see the world’s first AI movie director?

Data-driven Moviemaking: A Giant Leap

All things have a beginning.

When historians look back to the beginnings of artificial intelligence, they will look back at this time.

It will be sophisticated early AI software programs such as our own LargoAI that will be heralded as the beginning of true artificial intelligence.

While LargoAI requires highly-trained specialists to collate its findings, it’s a learning algorithm which allows it to increase the accuracy of its findings with the more data that analyzes.

To date, Largo AI has analyzed over 20,000 movies from all genres and countries around the globe in order to refine its predictive powers.

Because of the volume of data that Largo AI has analyzed over the last few years, it is able to accurately predict such things as box office gross on a country by country basis.

Largo AI has proved incredibly accurate in its predictions achieving a cross-validated accuracy of 86%.

Our predictions have already allowed production companies to green-light projects with the confidence, safe in the knowledge that they will make money.

Since this powerful AI analytics tool only gets better the more it is used, future predictions will be more accurate than ever.

This will truly empower the film industry to ensure that their movies are a success.

Another aspect of LargoAI is its ability to break films down into their basic ‘ingredients’ on a scene by scene basis. Our software can then categorize these movies far more accurately than other systems.

This data allows us to identify the audience for each film and recommend changes if a particular scene might be unappealing to its audience.

It is this unique understanding that makes LargoAI a true forerunner of artificial intelligence.

Big Steps

Each year, the amount of data that we produce as a global community gross massively.

it is this data that allows computers to learn.

The equation is simple – the more data that computer programs have about us and our behavior, the more accurately they can come to understand us.

It will be this understanding that becomes the basis of artificial intelligence, which will almost certainly mimic human behavior and nature.

When it comes to movies, it will be an accurate understanding of what we like that will allow computers to finally create movies that we will enjoy.

As programs such as LargoAI grow increasingly sophisticated, it will become possible to use them to create content rather than simply analyzing and providing feedback about it.

Herein lies the development of AI movie directors.

How AI Movie Director Will Work

It seems likely that the early artificial intelligence movie directors will be limited to our computers.

We already have editing programs such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut that allow us to do some pretty complicated edits and adjustments to our raw footage.

It is almost certain that these programs will begin to incorporate artificial intelligence features that start by suggesting specific cuts, effects, and pacing, etc., to ensure that we are putting together the most appealing movies for our audience.

Once again, such a feature will grow in accuracy and precision the more that it is used. Eventually, we could see a program such as Adobe Premiere Pro actually editing our footage automatically without the need of human input.

Certain criteria such as the age group and demographics of the audience could be preset and the program would automatically edit the footage according to the preferences of that particular group.

LargoAI is already able to analyze the ingredients of a film at the script level. The development of this system will eventually result in programs that will be able to automatically storyboard a movie from a script without the need for human input.

For cartoons and CGI movies, this approach will eventually lead to the computer being able to automatically generate an entire movie without any neat for human animators or directors.

It seems certain that the first AI directed movie will be either a cartoon or animated film.

The development of automated storyboards by AI programs would also facilitate the automation of real-world movie production too. Storyboards could be generated that could then be filmed by human filmmakers.

In essence, these will be the first AI directed movies as they won’t require a human director to make the creative decisions.

Eventually, as robotics integrate with AI technology, computers themselves would be able to go out and film the movies that they have already story boarded.

The question then will be, who makes the best movies? Humans or artificial intelligence?
